Drake Rock: It’s my pleasure! Thanks for having me.
JM: We're big fans of Male Perfection and Rock Hard Jocks so we hope we're able to represent other fans with similar questions. What's your background, and how did it help you create your sites Male Perfection & Rock Hard Jocks?
DR: My background is business and marketing. My passion is to surround myself will brilliant and creative minds that are able to look beyond the norm and produce unique top-shelf content. I am inspired by those kinds of people, so they are the types of personalities I brought on board to help actualize my vision. Back in 2004 I created three sites, one of which was Rock Hard Jocks.com, with the intention of producing hard core content. After taping three JO videos a series of events in my personal life caused me to abandon those ventures. The Male Perfection domain was originally owned by a photographer who used it to promote a coffee table book. It was a site of still images; I was a member and a fan. When Male Perfection closed in 2006 I contacted the photographer and asked if he would be interested in re-opening the site with video content. He wasn’t interested so I purchased the site and some of the content, re-launching it May 2007 with galleries of pictures that he had taken, and videos of a single model, Corey P.
The idea is to produce content that cannot be found anywhere else: sensual and erotic music videos that are geared toward women. So far, the majority of my members are women (we had no idea about this!--JM), but recently we have been marketing to a gay audience, also.
For the last year and a half I have remained in the background and allowed my staff to do what they do best, only giving top-level input and conceptual ideas. I realized in July 2008 that if the sites were to move to the next level that I would have to immerse myself one-hundred percent. And I have. I wrapped up a few other ventures I was involved in and now my entire focus is on Drake Rock Media, which includes Male Perfection and Rock Hard Jocks.
During the past few weeks there have been enormous and extremely obvious changes, everything from complete redesigns of both sites, to the opening of an affiliate site which provides tons of promotional material.
JM: Yes, we've really noticed the changes. Looks great.
JM: Let's start with Male Perfection. It's a very unique site with very beautiful men in erotic but non-explicit photos and videos set to contemporary high energy music. How did you come up with the idea for the site and what was your original "goal"?
DR: I’ve been to other sites that underscore their videos with music, but they neither use popular music nor club remixes, probably due to the copyright restrictions and the royalties involved. So I pursued that type of music - the songs that I would want to hear underscoring such videos.
Also, the videos on those other sites weren’t edited like mainstream music videos. I grew up watching the videos produced for VH1 and MTV and they could only push sexuality so far due to censors and conservatives. I wanted more uninhibited music videos, making them sexy, sensual and erotic.
Originally, I intended the videos to be focused on females, such as a Female Perfection site, but I was advised not to pursue it – by many people. (laughs) The gist of what I was being told: “Men are pigs; they want to watch women have sex, not women being sensual.”

JM: Yes, we've learned that one big time!
DR: Female viewers, on the other hand, seem to be starved for something more than shirtless hunks, but a lot of them are not into hard core pornography. So I went with a site that features men and gear it toward female viewers. When opening Male Perfection my main focus was promotions – promoting the guys and their ventures, promoting the music and recording artists, promoting the clothes and their designers. The tour pages looked more like a directory site with links pointing all over the net. The promotional aspect ended up being counterproductive, sending traffic away instead of enticing visitors to stay.
JM: Obviously you didn't start this site in a vacuum. How did other sites affect your creative process in putting the site together?
DR: I’m an open-minded guy, and I’ve seen my share of porn. At different times over the years all porn started to look the same: undress, five minutes of oral, five minutes taking it in front, five minutes taking it in back, sometimes an alternate position, and then the cum shot. It got to the point that I was watching scenes only until they undressed, and then fast-forwarded to the next scene. I was bored with porn. There are only so many ways sex scenes can be filmed – the body only contorts into a finite number of positions.
Then it hit me – I like the tease. And you don’t get much of that in porn. (laughs) What I realized is that I had an infinite number of possibilities in the ways I could film the “tease”. And I knew I wasn’t the only person starved for more than just sex scenes.
Since there really isn’t anything else like Male Perfection, the site was more or less developed in a vacuum. I guess if I was influenced by anything it was more from the standpoint of “let’s break new ground” and I asked myself, “What have I never seen before?”
JM: That's very interesting. Once you had your idea, how did you find those first models for your site and how difficult was it to get started?
DR: My first videographer had been a photographer in the fashion and fitness industry for many years, and had worked with a lot of guys. I had him set up the first bookings. Then I brought Kathy onto the team as a talent recruiter and she has booked the remaining guys. It wasn’t that difficult.
JM: Has the process changed? Are you finding more guys contacting you about appearing on the site than the other way around? Or are you still keeping an eye out for your own discoveries?
DR: The process has changed dramatically. Originally, I offered two types of shoots – partial frontal nudity, and what I called “zero tolerance”, in which no penis/scrotum was used in the final videos. With the opening of Rock Hard Jocks, we intentionally booked full frontal. Two months ago I stopped offering “zero tolerance” shoots. So a lot of guys that applied in the beginning are no longer interested. But we’re always looking. If we run across a super hot guy somewhere, we approach him.
JM: Cool. The worst thing they can say is no. What are your criteria for models in terms of looks, body, profession, etc?
DR: That has been a balancing act because originally we were booking all ripped and shredded guys, but members were giving us feedback, saying “perfect” means different things to everyone, and the members wanted more variety. Let’s face it, all of the guys on the site are perfect in some way to someone, but they are not all what I would consider ideal or iconic. With my immersion into the sites, I decided that I would have final say on the guys that we book in the future. I intend to bump it up a notch. (laughs) Actually, quite a few notches. Starting with the upcoming October shoot, many of the guys that have previously applied will no longer make the cut – at least for Male Perfection. Some of them I will still be able to use on Rock Hard Jocks.
The site is going to start living up to its name. Not everyone will be attracted to that type of guy, but it’s difficult to have a site called Male Perfection and feature guys with less than perfect bodies.
JM: How objective are you when choosing models? In other words do you put guys on your site that you aren't attracted to but know they'd be popular? Conversely do you let your personal preferences guide your choices?
DR: Admittedly, I do have a “type”, and I can honestly say that none of the guys currently on the site are my type. Logically your next question will be, “What is your type?” but I’m not going to answer that. My ideal will be booked some day, and no one but me will know who it is.
Let’s just say that future guys will have to meet a certain criteria. It’s nothing set in stone, because I don’t want the site to become a bunch of clones, but I will definitely be more stringent in my selections.
JM: What impresses us and probably other fans is that early on you had a several fairly well known men participate like Ben Patrick Johnson,
DR: A month after I opened Male Perfection, back when the site was still all about promoting the guys, Ben Patrick Johnson contacted us saying that he wanted to be on the site in an effort to promote his third novel.
JM: That's unfortunate. It would have been interesting to see that direction.

JM: From this we can see that you have a very high visual standard when it comes to models. How difficult is it to keep this standard? And have you had to reject models because of this or because they simply didn't photograph well?
DR: Of course we’ve had to tell some applicants that we could not use their look. Some of them are good looking men, but they didn’t have the “it” factor. They can all still have very successful careers elsewhere. Let’s face it. I can’t book everyone, even if I wanted to, so I have to be selective. As for guys that we’ve already shot, I have one that I’m still struggling with whether or not to use his footage. The pictures that he originally submitted were retouched. Kathy and I knew that. Although I wasn’t aware how much they were retouched. When he showed up for the shoot the videographer called and asked what he should do. We shot him anyway, but my gut feel is that footage will never make the web site.
JM:Obviously we don't expect you to give us names, but do you have your favorites and guys that you'd like to do more videos?
DR: Oh, absolutely! I definitely have my favorites, but it’s more about seeing them in the raw footage that we choose not to use, where the guys are just being goofy and themselves.
Personally, I’ve never worked with any of the guys; I never attend the shoots, never met with any of them or talked with them. Kathy does all of the up-front footwork, and I contract videographers to shoot the footage
I would definitely book some of the guys again, either because their personalities come through in the footage, they have an incredible on-camera sex appeal, they simply tape well, and/or they’re a member favorite.
JM: Do you have any favorite models or guys from other sites (past or present) that you'd like to have on your site?
DR: Yes, two! One of them I’ve seen in a mainstream movie, and the other I’ve seen in advertising. I’ve spoken with both, wanting to shoot them individually for Male Perfection, and then in an erotic video for Rock Hard Jocks. Both are straight and neither have been with a man, so their asking price makes it cost prohibitive at this time. If it happens, it will be the perfect pairing because both are extremely popular and both have huge fan bases. (Darn!--JM)
JM: We notice that the models seem very at ease doing these provocative photos and videos. Have they been easy to direct?
DR: My videographers are professional and reputable. They have solid careers on the mainstream side of the industry, and their reputations are impeccable. I’ve heard horror stories about some photographers and videographers grouping, touching and coming onto models (eww-JM) during mainstream shoots, as well as in porn. There is absolutely no reason to touch a model during a shoot – well, unless we specifically book them for that type of shoot, such as a massage video on Rock Hard Jocks. In that case the model is fully aware that it will be an interactive video when we book him. Other than that, “handsy” photographers and videographers are simply unprofessionals who are using the guys for their own thrills.
My videographers are also very laid back. Their approaches are similar and they have a way of talking with the guys that makes them quickly relax and feel comfortable. All of the conversations are recorded while filming, and it’s amazing how quickly the models relax and open up about their personal lives.
JM: Do the models have any input into content or direction?
DR: In regard to a video concept, I would be completely open to the idea of a model saying, “Let’s try this-this-and-this.” Why? Because if they’re suggesting it I know they will feel absolutely comfortable in performing it, and therefore we would capture the guy completely being himself. So far none of the model have made those types of suggestions. Overall, the models are given minimal direction. That’s intentional so the guys’ personalities come through. And from what I’ve been told, there has only been one guy who was absolutely bland to work with. He had zero personality, and that’s something we can’t fake while editing. We had to completely scrap one of his videos because the footage was so boring.
JM: Have you and the guys developed friendships?
DR: Like I said, I’ve never met any of the guys. Until recently I’ve been minimally involved with the site. My videographers have developed great working relationships with the guys. The shoots are laid back and relaxed. When the cameras aren’t on the models’ faces, they are usually talking and joking with the videographers. A couple of the guys have commented that they would only do erotic work with my videographers. Most of the models on the site are straight. At the last shoot one of the guys was gay. He made the comment that it was strange working with a straight cameraman. Come to find out the cameraman didn’t flirt with him. (laughs) It’s definitely been a learning experience. Now our straight cameramen have to learn how to flirt with the gay models.
JM: Your videos aren't just art in motion, they're music videos. Was this part of your original plan?
DR: From first conception, producing music videos was the intention. In the beginning they were more like actual mainstream videos, edited extremely fast. An overwhelming number of members asked us to slow them down and ease back on the editing so they could enjoy the beauty of the guys. I think we’ve found a happy medium.
JM: Yes we agree--the best of both worlds.
JM: As for Rock Hard Jocks, was this site always part of the overall company plan? If not how did the idea for this site come about? Did you feel it was something that you needed to do or wanted to do?
DR: Yes and no. I finally launched Rock Hard Jocks January 1, 2008 because I had full frontal footage that I didn’t want to use on Male Perfection. Frankly, it was Sarge Logan’s doing. He walked into his shoot, saying, “I looked at Male Perfection and it’s good, but people are going to want more, so we’re going to give them more.” When I received the footage from the videographer, Sarge had done a great deal of full frontal, and I thought, “What the hell am I going to do with this?” That was the birth of Rock Hard Jocks.
JM: We owe a thank you to Sarge!
DR: I know the direction that Rock Hard Jocks is headed – hard core porn – and I’m okay with that. What I want to do is have it develop into something more artful. For example, we recently shot porn star Cort Donnovan. Normally, we book five hours and shoot four videos. If there is a JO/cum shot, it is the last video. So the challenge is producing content for the other three Rock Hard Jocks videos that is interesting enough so members don’t need a cum shot in every video.
In one of Cort’s non-cum videos we shot twenty minutes of him licking, pretending to kiss someone, and a few other things. Afterward we played the footage back on a large flat panel television and then videotaped Cort interacting with himself on the screen. The end result was better than I anticipated. That’s what I mean by artful. I don’t want Rock Hard Jocks to simply become a typical hard core porn site.
JM: It sure isn't!
JM: Obviously there are several guys from Male Perfection that appear at Rock Hard Jocks. Was it easy to get them to make the transition from "suggestive" to "explicit"?
DR: When I first opened Rock Hard Jocks I promised my members one thing: that the videos would contain the footage I couldn’t use on Male Perfection. In the first videos the guys are flaccid. Over time, the guys that we booked for Male Perfection started showing off their hard-ons without us prompting them to do so. Sticking with the “tease” concept on Male Perfection, some of the videos would show the hard-on for a split second at the very end and fade to black. Then members could see everything a few weeks later on Rock Hard Jocks.
Some of the guys we previously shot want nothing to do with full frontal nudity. Others have no problem with it so long as they don’t have to cum. A few have shrugged and said, “What ever you need, Drake.”
JM: Were there guys that jumped at the chance? Were/are there guys from Male Perfection who said no way and later changed their mind or may be changing their mind about doing a video for Rock Hard Jocks? Were you surprised by any of the guys who said yes or no?
DR: TJ probably went from “zero tolerance” to “cum” in the shortest amount of time. When TJ originally submitted himself, he refused to do any frontal, not even partial frontal, so we said, “No thanks.” A week prior to shooting he contacted us saying he would do partial frontal, and we booked him. He was popular on the site, so we asked if he would do full frontal. After some consideration he agreed. It was at that second shoot that TJ looked at the cameraman and said, “I’m sitting here practically jacking off; how much will you pay me to cum?” The cameraman called, we made TJ and offer, and fifteen minutes later he was unloading on the glass table top.
JM: Yes, once a guy gets going it's hard to stop without wanting to "finish".

JM: With the more explicit videos here you've been able to maintain the same level of artistic visual quality found at Male Perfection. Is this as hard to do as it looks?
DR: So far, in my opinion, there has been very little artistic content in the cum videos. In some of the others that were ported over from Male Perfection, yeah they are more artistic. But I’ve viewed the raw footage from the last shoots and they are standard cum videos. I’m just being honest. It’s another reason I want to get more involved, giving the cameramen more direction.
Ideally, I would like to produce artistic hard core videos that are underscored with dance mixes, like on Male Perfection, but I haven’t found any recording artists that are open to the idea because their goal is to go mainstream and they don’t want to be associated with hard core pornography. I understand that, and yet I don’t, because controversy gets immediate media recognition these days, especially if it involves sex.
JM: While the content here at Rock Hard Jocks is more explicit than Male Perfection, there are varying degrees of it. Do you intend to keep this kind of variety or are you looking to do more videos with stronger sexual content?
DR: I cannot say with absolute certainty what will become of Rock Hard Jocks. I do have the next year mapped out, but how it will unfold is yet to be seen. As with Male Perfection, I do not want to clone other sites that already exist. The market is saturated with generic hard core porn. Besides, if I produced the same formulaic content that the other sites are churning out, I would become bored and start looking for the next creative outlet. I need variety. I thrive on it. So there will always be variety. Male Perfection and Rock Hard Jocks are a way for me to express myself. Although I’ve been sitting in the background, I’ve always voiced my opinion and given direction. The next big step is to move out of hotel rooms and start booking locations to give the videos some dimension.
JM: In terms of going farther with the content, right now (aside from a massage video) there are only "solo" videos. Do you intend to keep it this way?
DR: The intention is to have more interactive videos. We shot three interactive videos that I will be uploaded during the next two months. Although, my preference is to have the inactive videos be more artistic than the last three we shot.
JM: Is it part of your wanting to keep your original vision intact? Are you tempted to do videos with two guys? Have site members asked for it? Have any of the guys wanted to try it?
DR: (laughs) None of the models have asked to do guy/guy content. Some, when asked if they are open to the idea flat out said, “Never.” They have families and kids to think about. I’m unsure if I’ll ever produce guy/guy content for Male Perfection. But never say never. As for Rock Hard Jocks, it will definitely move in that direction, although not exclusively. Most likely it will be come a bisexual site, with straight, gay and bi content on it. At least that is the plan.
JM: And what about at Male Perfection? Are there any plans to feature guys together in videos in non-sexual artistic content?
DR: Recently I was contacted by a web site that has been conducting a five-year survey. In their findings nine percent of the participants identified themselves as being completely gay. Forty-one percent responded they are completely straight. And fifty percent answered that they are somewhere in between. Understandably, surveys aren’t perfectly accurate, but even so, that supports what I’ve always believed: that a majority of the population is bisexual. In their research they’ve found that most of the men who fall into the fifty percent “in between” category want to see content that depicts two men together erotically, so long as there is no blatant sex, and definitely no anal. If that’s true, it’s a huge untapped market. Being pragmatic, I am not basing my business paradigm on the findings of one site. From another standpoint your question is dead-on. Currently, there are not plans to head in that direction.
JM: You sell posters and calendars of the sexy guys from the sites. Are there plans to expand the merchandise line?
DR: Globally, poster and calendar sales have flat lined. The market is oversaturated, and as it sits today I probably won’t produce either for 2009. The ROI isn’t worth the effort.
JM: The online video market is very competitive so we'd like you to tell us and our readers what do you think separates Male Perfection & Rock Hard Jocks from the rest of the sites. We know what WE like about your sites but we'd like you to fill in the blank: " I would recommend my sites to prospective members because __________________________.
DR: (laughs) I really want to put on my marketing hat and give a sales pitch, but I’ll refrain. In all its simplicity, the sites are unique, artistic, creative, erotic, and some of the conceptual ideas have not been previously seen. It is interesting is that you mention “competition”. I don’t see other sites as being competition. The content is too different, and let’s face it, someone who wants to watch fuck videos probably isn’t going to join one of my sites over those providing hard core content.
I know some of the owners of other sites. We’ve had some interesting conversations, and I would be completely open to collaborating, doing some cross-marketing and creating content that excels beyond what either of us is currently doing. I like to keep my options open. If anyone throws an idea my way, I say, “Let’s try it!” If it fails, oh well, what did we learn from it? If it succeeds, how can we build off that?
Some of my guys had previously shot with other companies. Some have worked with me first and gone onto other sites. I have no problem with either scenario. Why shouldn’t the guys get as much work as possible? That’s why I don’t have the guys sign exclusive or restrictive contracts. The sites that do are being selfish. They’re looking out for themselves rather than the guys, and I don’t agree with that.
The only good I see coming out of viewing any other site as “the competition” is that it would push me to produce unique content. Maybe that’s why I don’t see them as competitors – the guys on their sites are their products. I consider the videos to be my products - which includes the music, the video concept, the lighting, as well as the guys.
I want to keep trying new concepts, experiment with pushing the guys in new directions, expanding to new locations, changing up the way we edit the videos. I admit, we were stuck in a rut for a while. Shooting six guys in the same hotel room gets a bit stale after a while. There are only so many videos that can be produced in a 1000 square/foot space and have them be unique. That’s why I want to start shooting on location.
JM: Both sites have undergone some redesigns that make them accessible and easy to navigate for members and for site visitors. Are there any plans for more visual changes?
DR: Both were completely overhauled within the last month. Now it is time to step back and determine the impact of those changes. I learned patience early on in life. After a few months we’ll review what is working, and tweak the things that aren’t.
My members are extremely good about telling me what they do and do not like. I appreciate that, and encourage it. Also, twice a year I put together a focus group and give them free access to the sites. In return, they provide constructive criticism and suggest improvements. This new design is based on feedback from the latest focus group.
JM: At the end of the day what are you most proud of at your sites?
DR: That they are unique. That there is nothing else like them. That they are giving me the opportunity to be creative. And that the sites appeal to other people who enjoy sensual and erotic content, people who do not have the luxury of producing videos for themselves. J
M: Is there anything you'd like to do on the site that right now is unlikely? For example, crosssovers with other sites?
DR: A decade ago, on network television, a blackout theme was incorporated into three shows – Friends, Fraiser and Mad About You. I thought that was genius. Also, the Friend’s character of Ursula, Phoebe’s twin sister, had a recurring role on Mad About You.
I think it would be fun to do something similar with other content producers. Either have a theme or a guy that is a common thread. Most likely, something like that will have to happen between my domains. It already is happening on some level, so maybe I’ll just keep doing it myself.
JM: Do you have any plans for the site that you can talk about here? Exclusive models perhaps? Returning models? Any hints of anything that's coming that you'd consider exciting news?
DR: I’ve shot myself in the foot a couple of times announcing things to my members, and then for reasons beyond my control they never happened. So, unless footage is in the can, as they say, I’m hesitant to share things that I’m planning. I am excited that Czech super stud Jakub decided to shoot with us. He shot some shirtless beefcake content for another site, and was offered an obscene amount of money to do solo work for one of the hard core providers, but decided he felt most comfortable doing my sites. Even with the limited previews we’ve shown, there has been quite a bit of chatter and buzz. He will be a big hit with the members.
JM: We agree on that! We're excited about it ourselves.
JM: Finally, is there anything we haven't covered that you'd like to say about the site?
DR: The beauty of these sites is that there are no hard rules, and no limits. One day we can shoot a guy having fun in a bubble bath, the next day a garage mechanic theme, and then do something wild like Dustin’s “Paint” video. Really, no idea is too far-fetched. We’ve even discussed shooting green screen and creating an entire environment around a guy. Something like that is a ways off, but it’s definitely within the realm of possibility.
I want to reach a point where people want to keep coming back because they never know what we’re going to do next.
JM: Again, thanks for taking the time to chat with us. Continued success to you.
DR: And to you! Thank you as well! I enjoyed this.
