Matthew Rush

We’re very pleased to present our interview with Matthew Rush, who in over 25 films in 6 years has become a superstar in male erotica.  Originally from Pennsylvania, Matthew Rush Click Here was a personal trainer and competition bodybuilder before graduating to adult films for Falcon Studios where he is now a lifetime exclusive. In addition to appearing on stage in Psycho Beach Party, Making Porn, and 10 Naked Men, Matthew has done film work. He’s appeared in the cult comedy Another Gay Movie and in the TV movie Third Man Out with Chad Allen. Matthew has also stepped behind the camera directing Falcon’s 2007 film Rush and Release

:  First, Matthew thanks for taking the time for this interview.
Matthew Rush:  Hey it's my pleasure

JM:  Can you tell us a little about your youth?  What was it like growing up in a small town? Were you a school athlete?  How did this lead to bodybuilding and personal training?
Matthew Rush  My youth was pretty simple.  Let's face it growing up in a small town of barely over 300 had it's advantages.  I really couldn't get into a lot of trouble and I was forced to use my imagination a lot because there was really nothing to do.  In school, I was pretty much a nerd.  My favorite classes were computer programming, chemistry, and art.  I was in the drama club, bowling club and foreign exchange club.  Me and sports was like Richard Simmons trying to throw a football.  It wasn't natural!  Then I set foot into the gym and things changed.  I found my calling.  I started lifting and seeing my body change which eventually led to bodybuilding

JM: On a little more personal level did you come out at an early age?

Matthew Rush
I came out when I was 19 though I knew at an early age that I was gay.

JM: What led you from bodybuilding and personal training to adult films? Were you discovered?
Or did you actively pursue a film career?

Matthew Rush
Well, it's kind of a long story.  I was approached by a Falcon Studios rep in a bar to do movies.  I declined the offer but the guy who approached me was cool and we chatted for a while.  At the end of the night, we exchanged numbers and kept in contact.  Two years later, I went to work only to find that the gym I was working in was sold by the owner and the doors were chained shut.  That same night, the Falcon Studios rep called me to see how I was doing.  I told him that I lost my job today and I didn't know what to do.  He convinced me to go out to San Fran and see what Falcon was about.  I flew out, toured the office and jacked off in front of a camera.  By the end of the day, they offered me my first contract.

JM:  You have a very distinctively handsome look and muscular body. It must have played a role
in getting into the industry, but do you think it was also the main factor in your becoming a star so quickly?

Matthew Rush
I think it was a big help.  I wasn't the typical blond haired, blue eyed, boy next door.

JM:  Your acting and performing style is also very distinctive. You seem to really get into your scenes. How much acting goes into it?

Matthew Rush
Most of the time there is a sexual attraction between me and my scene partners so it's pretty easy to get into what I'm doing.

JM: In your years as popular actor, what do you think is the biggest misconception about you?
Can you tell us something about you that people don’t know and that doesn’t show on films?

Matthew Rush
Well, I think people think I have sex 24/7.  Truth be known, I have less sex now than I did before I started in the industry.

JM: You’ve gotten to travel to some interesting places, exotic and foreign for your films?  Was this
fun for you? And how much was work was all this travel?

Matthew Rush
Yeah I've been all over the world and it's been a blast.  Most of the trips I work a lot but there is always off days where I can go out and have fun.

JM: As for the work aspect, can you give us an idea of how much labor goes into a production?
There is fun involved but how long does it all take?  Can you give us an idea of how much time you have to spend preparing, filming and doing takes on average?

Matthew Rush
A typical scene will take anywhere from 4-8 hours to shoot.  There is a lot of "hurry up and wait" time due to moving lights or waiting for things to get set up.

JM:  When you aren’t filming what do you do for fun?

Matthew Rush
Because I travel a lot, I spend a lot of times with my friends.  I also catch up on beach time and couch and beach time.

JM:  Having a personal life can be difficult—how do you find the time to do it and keep it separate from work?

Matthew Rush
It can be tough at times.  Sometimes I'm on the road for weeks at a time.  Plus there is always that jealousy factor when I date someone outside the industry.  The guys I date have to confident, understanding and at times patient.  I try to keep my work and private life separate.

JM: Speaking of which, you have had relationships with some of your co-stars. Is that as hard to maintain as we think?  Do you keep work and home life separate?  Can you tell us how the dynamic works? Do you remain friends with your past partners?  And are you presently seeing someone?

Matthew Rush
Dating within the industry is easier than dating outside it.  Other porn stars know what it's like to shoot a movie so there's less stress.  I try to keep work and home life as separate as I can.  Anyone I date, I tell them that they are dating Greg and not Matthew Rush.  When the relationship ends, I try to remain friends.  It's silly to not get along after the break up because there's history and a lot of good memories.

JM: Not a question you need to answer or give us specifics, but are there actors you have wanted to work with but haven’t had the chance? And any you’ve wanted to see outside of films? Are there any guys you’d like to tell us about who helped you or were mentors to you (again no names unless you wish)

Matthew Rush
I've always wanted to work with Luke Garrett and Gage Weston.  Being with either of those guys outside film would be hot!  (are you listening, Colt? -JM) As far as mentors, Zak Spears was a mentor early in my career.

JM:  Do you have favorites in terms of guys with whom you’ve worked?

Matthew Rush
:
Everyone that I have worked with has been great.  My favorite was Jake Andrews because I have had a crush on him way before I started doing films.

JM:  You’ve also been one of the few adult actors who has done theater and films in non-adult roles. Can you give us an idea what that’s been like for you?  Is it something you’d like to pursue? And is it something you’re able to pursue? In other words how difficult would bit be to get a job doing non-adult acting?

Matthew Rush
:
It's been amazing.  I never thought that I would my career would branch out into mainstream.  I would be great if I could do more mainstream.  I think as we grow as a society, porn is becoming more acceptable and you'll be seeing more porn actors go mainstream.

JM: You’ve also directed a feature too. Did you enjoy it and is it something which you plan do do more in the future?

Matthew Rush
:
I had so much fun directing Rush and Release . I definitely want to do more.

JM: Speaking of the future, you’ve pretty much been able to write your own ticket (as far as we can tell) What do you want to do next?

Matthew Rush
: I plan on directing more for Falcon.  I eventually want to own my own company.  Hopefully within the next few years that will happen.

JM:  We asked you earlier about what you’d like people to know about you that they might no be aware. With that in mind, what music are you listening to these days? Movies, TV? Books?  Charities? Politics? Something you like to do with your free time that would surprise us and your
fans?

Matthew Rush
:
I'm just your typical guy. If you actually knew me, you would see that I'm a huge dork!  As far as music, my iPod has everything on it.  Mostly dance remixes though.  The last movie I watched was "30 Days of Night".  The last book was "The Secret" and any charity that involves helping people with HIV is great.  I never discuss politics.

JM: Lastly, is there any advice you have to give to guys who are interested in getting in the biz? Something you’ve learned abiout the biz and/or about  yourself?

Matthew Rush
:
It's a job so you have to treat it like one and don't be a diva!

JackManly: Again many thanks for taking the time. We appreciate this very much.
